The Political and Social Conditions of Iran as Reflected in Contemporary Literature, with Emphasis on the Works and Thought of Malek al-Sho‘arā Bahār

Abstract

Contemporary Iranian literature, particularly during the turbulent Constitutional era and the years that followed, has consistently served as a comprehensive reflection of political and social transformations. Among the prominent figures of this period, Malek al-Sho‘arā Mohammad-Taqi Bahār (1886–1951), one of the most distinguished poets, writers, journalists, and political activists of his time, played an unparalleled role in articulating national concerns and promoting resistance to despotism, freedom-seeking ideals, and demands for justice. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach and drawing on the theoretical framework of “reflection” in the sociology of literature, this study examines how Iran’s political and social conditions were represented in Bahār’s thought and works. The principal research question is as follows: How and through what literary mechanisms did Bahār portray the issues of his time in his poetry and prose, and to what extent did he contribute to raising public awareness and shaping reformist movements? The findings indicate that, through diverse poetic forms, an elevated yet lucid language, and a synthesis of tradition and modernism, Bahār reflected major political events—including the despotism of Mohammad Ali Shah, the conquest of Tehran, the First World War, and the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919—as well as social issues such as poverty, widespread ignorance, the status of women, class inequalities, and the crisis of national identity. He was not merely a court poet but rather a “national poet” and the awakened conscience of his age, placing literature in the service of Iran’s freedom and progress. Drawing on authoritative primary sources, this article presents a comprehensive account of the close relationship between literature and society in Bahār’s works.
